Shenango China Restaurant Ware Salad Plate
Originally Made for Ivanhoe Restaurant (Chicago)
I have to admit to having a soft spot in my heart (or head) for restaurantware. This very colorful vintage restaurantware salad plate is from Shenango (Interpace mark). This thick plate measures 7-1/8 inches wide at the rim. The rim has a green border decorated with characters from Ivanhoe, one of the major works of Sir Walter Scott, whose characters include Ivanhoe, Rebecca, Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Rowena, and Coeur de Lion. I believe this pattern was made originally for the Ivanhoe Restaurant in Chicago (North Clark St & Wellington).
It is in good to very good condition. There are no cracks, chips, flakes, crazing, or hairlines. There are medium heavy utensil marks, but no big or deep scratches or scuffs. There is a dark spot in the white body, but it appears to be original to manufacture.
The bottom is stamped with “Shenango China U.S.A. / By Interpace / N-29” which I believe is the date code for 1971. There is also a letter “C” and the number 84.
